With XML AND SOAP PROGRAMMING FOR BIZTALK SERVERS, enterprise developers get the work-ready information and tools they need to help their organizations meet the challenge of doing business in 'Internet time'. Author Brian Travis-a highly regarded XML instructor and solutions developer-offers expert guidance for building real-world, business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce applications using XML and BizTalk. This practical, code-rich book begins with an overview of XML in the B2B context, including coverage of XSL and industry schemas. Readers then dive into the BizTalk framework for application integration, stepping through the development of a working BizTalk server application. All the book's code is featured on CD-ROM so programmers can see what the syntax looks like and better comprehend the intricacies of implementing BizTalk solutions; the Microsoft BizTalk Server 2000 Technical Preview helps expedite development of their own B2B applications. Case study discussions and a summary of references help round out the reader's understanding of technological and business considerations.

Teaches the reader how to create business-tobusiness, or B2B, e-commerce applications using eXtensible Markup Language, or XML. Discusses the standards, industry schemes, and BizTalk Framework as well as the how-to's of application integration and more. The CD-ROM contains an E-Book with the examples that go with the book. This book is billed as an introduction to XML, SOAP, and BizTalk, but I found that just the XML introduction could stand alone as an excellent book. I have read several books on XML, and they are either a re-statement of the XML spec that is freely available on the Web, or else a description of how to use XML in a very narrow task, like building Web pages or as a replacement to HTML.

The first part of this book covers the XML spec, including the well-formed document and the importance of schemas. It also provides an excellent introduction to the XSLT language for XML transformations, using a novel approach to teaching.

The second half of the book is devoted to the BizTalk open document specification. The author notes that a BizTalk server can be written in any language to run on any platform, not just Microsoft. The book has complete code for two BizTalk servers, one is written using Visual Basic and Active Server Pages, the other in OmniMark, a language for building Web sites. I would have preferred to have the second BizTalk server be written in Java or perl, but it was refreshing to be exposed to a new language. There is even an appendix on OmniMark, which provides a quick overview of this language that seems to be underestimated.

In all, this book is well worth the money, if only for the introduction to XML and XSLT. The SOAP and BizTalk parts are just icing on the cake.

I agree with the previous reviews dated on September 20 and September 23. This book does provide you a nice high level overview of SOAP and BizTalk, and fun to read too.

It doesn't goes terribly to the in-depth details, but still give you plenty of information for you to get started in these area. However, I do have some reservation regarding using Omnimark as the language for the SOAP and BizTalk Server examples, because it's not the most popular language in the XML world (it was very popular in SGML world). It will be nice to see some SOAP/BizTalk examples in JAVA!

Talking about the MS BizTalk Server 2000, it comes with a nice tutorial, pretty helpful to get yourself familiar with the product.

I could not find useful information in this book. It is not good neither for beginners nor for advanced users.
